The artistic process behind the production of the images is a fascinating journey through creativity and sustainability. The artist Morten Hjertø creates unique works by utilizing recycled materials such as cardboard, glass and metal from industrial sources. This approach not only gives each work a unique and authentic character, but it also minimizes waste and adds an extra dimension to the art's message.
It is not just paint on a standardized canvas bought ready-made in an art shop (paint shop), as almost 90% of all Norwegian artists operate (figures taken from the air); ergo a painting without personality and character.
It is cardboard and metal with a distinctive character, with all the "mistakes and defects", ragged ragged edges, holes in the surface, damage and tears, sand and gravel... Everything made from scratch - by me, including the frame. In other words, charm and personal from here to --- . Uniquely different -
Hjertø's choice of recycled cardboard, glass and metal gives a raw and industrial aesthetic that reflects the dark and gloomy underbelly of consumer society. To create a visual structure and depth, he uses elements and fractions of metal shavings, sand, and holes that provide translucent areas and contrasts in the images. These elements provide a shift between light and dark areas, creating visual contrasts.
To bind the materials together and give them shape, Hjertø uses a creative approach by attaching them directly to black-painted wooden frames using staplers and screws, a nail gun, and more. This creates a raw and experimental feeling, and the materials' textures and dimensions give the works a unique three-dimensionality.
Hjertø's use of stencils for iconic motifs and figures provides a visual continuity in the works, and the references to classic films and post-punk provide a deeper understanding and resonance. Inspired by the dark and gloomy of industrial society, these images capture both aesthetic beauty and a deeply felt message about our consumer culture and its consequences.
The result of this artistic process is a unique collection of works that not only express a visual history, but also carry a deeper meaning and reflection on our society and our culture.
